This week I started learning how to play the Flam rudiment. A flam is essentially a grace note and requires one stick to hit just before the other. This is done by having different stick heights in each hand and coordinating the flam to happen just before the primary note. To start learning this rudiment my roommate gave me a quick lesson that she remembered from the percussion techniques class she took last year which was really helpful. After that I turned to Youtube to help strengthen my understanding even more. Here is a great video I found that breaks things down to small steps:
This was a great rudiment to do following the triple stroke roll struggle because I felt like I understood the concept relatively quickly which was encouraging! Here is a snippet of this weeks practice!

Charlie! Thanks for schooling me on FLAMS! I had never heard that term before – definitely adding it IMMEDIATELY to my vocab. Am also looking forward to the end of the term demo you’ll be giving us on your new found drum skills. FLAM IT UP!
